EnEfG at a glance

What is the EnEfG?

The German Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) is a federal law that came into effect on 18 November 2023, implementing the EU’s Energy Efficiency Directive (2023/1791). It mandates energy efficiency improvements across the private and public sectors.

Who is affected by the EnEfG?

Companies with a total final energy consumption over 2.5 GWh per year (based on the average of the last three calendar years) must create and publish action plans for economically viable energy-saving measures (§9 EnEfG).

Companies that exceed 7.5 GWh per year must implement a certified energy or environmental management system (e.g. ISO 50001 or EMAS) covering at least 90% of their energy consumption (§8 EnEfG).

What documentation is required under the EnEfG?

Companies must document their total final energy consumption and demonstrate compliance with the relevant thresholds. Depending on the level of consumption, this includes either proof of an implemented energy or environmental management system or the creation and publication of action plans for identified energy-saving measures. All required documentation must be complete, verifiable, and ready for potential review by BAFA.

How does the EnEfG solution help?

Our Solution captures, organizes and stores all data and documentation required for compliance checks. It automates documentation and KPI reporting by building on your carbon accounting data, reducing duplication and manual input by fetching energy data reported under Scope 1 & 2 GHG emissions. Additionally, all information on measures for energy efficiency and waste heat are captured in the solution, ready for audit and checks.
