Episode #23: Guilt-free motorsport & climate ambition – with Jennifer Babington, Envision Racing

In this episode of Sustainable Edge, host Joachim Nahem, Executive Chairman and Co-Founder at Position Green, sits down with Jennifer Babington, Operations Director and General Counsel at Envision Racing, to explore how the power of sport can accelerate climate action, cultural transformation, and technological innovation.

As part of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, Envision Racing is proving that elite sport and credible sustainability can coexist. Formula E is the first sport certified net zero carbon since inception, using 100% renewable energy and pioneering second-life battery projects. Its Hankook tires, made from sustainable and fully recyclable materials, exemplify the innovation driving motorsport’s green revolution.

Sustainability at speed

Envision Racing operates within Formula E’s three-step climate strategy:

  • Measure: Comprehensive lifecycle assessment of emissions across Scopes 1, 2, and 3.
  • Reduce: Continuous reduction across logistics, operations, travel, and energy use.
  • Offset: Remaining emissions are offset via certified climate projects in host markets.

Under the BSI Net Zero Pathway, Formula E commits to:

  • Cutting Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 50% by 2030
  • Cutting Scope 3 emissions by 27.5% by 2030
  • Achieving credible net zero by 2040 (or by 2050 at the latest)

Jennifer shares how Envision Racing is turning these principles into practice: from freight emissions and sustainable technology to fan engagement and sponsorship integrity.

The power of the platform

With races broadcast in 150+ countries and a global audience of 491 million viewers (up 35% from the previous season), Formula E is one of the fastest-growing sports on the planet. Its Gen3 cars, reaching 320 km/h and accelerating from 0–100 km/h in just 2.8 seconds, are powered by 47 kWh batteries, a powerful showcase for the future of clean mobility.

Through its Race Against Climate Change initiative, Envision Racing is using its platform to inspire fans and partners alike to take tangible climate action. From gamified apps to real-world impact, including tree-planting pledges, every race becomes an opportunity to drive environmental awareness and measurable change.

Why it matters

Sport has always been a mirror of culture, and now, it’s a catalyst for climate action. Envision Racing’s work demonstrates that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand, setting a blueprint for industries far beyond motorsport.
