CDP at a glance

What is CDP?

CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) is a non-profit organisation that provides a global system for companies, cities, states and regions to measure and disclose their environmental impacts, risks and opportunities related to climate change, water security, and deforestation.

The world’s economy looks to CDP as the gold standard of environmental reporting with the richest and most comprehensive dataset on corporate and city action. CDP reporting is widely recognised as a leading standard for environmental disclosure and is increasingly being used by companies to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and transparency. Many investors and organisations also use CDP data to evaluate companies’ environmental performance and integrate sustainability into their investment decisions.

CDP reporting involves companies answering a detailed questionnaire that covers different environmental topics such as greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, water management, supply chain management, and governance. The responses are then evaluated and scored by CDP, and the results are shared with investors, customers and other stakeholders to help them make informed decisions about the company’s environmental performance and sustainability practices.

Who conducts CDP reporting?

CDP reporting is relevant to companies from all sectors and industries, particularly enterprises that have a significant environmental impact or are exposed to environmental risks and opportunities related to climate change, water security and deforestation. This includes companies in sectors such as energy, transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, mining and finance, among others.

Companies that operate in regions or industries that are especially vulnerable to climate change impacts, such as extreme weather events, sea-level rise, and water scarcity, may face increased regulatory and market pressures to manage their environmental risks and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
By reporting on environmental performance and sustainability practices, companies can show they are taking proactive steps to manage their environmental risks. Demonstrating commitment to sustainability and transparency also builds trust with stakeholders such as investors, customers and employees.

In 2022, a record-breaking 18,700+ companies, representing half of global market capitalization, were disclosed through CDP. Major federal supplier in the US are now required by law to disclose environmental impacts through CDP.
