How PolyPeptide is shaping sustainability and creating long-term value in the face of Omnibus

In the face of regulatory uncertainty and the ‘Stop-the-clock’ proposal, the instinct for many is to pause. But rather than slowing down, PolyPeptide has reconfirmed their commitment to decisions taken and workstreams started—publishing climate reports, committing to science-based targets, and expanding sustainability reporting across the entire group. In this story, you’ll discover why sustainability at PolyPeptide isn’t just about ticking boxes—it’s essential to the business.

From raw material to responsibility

At first glance, producing peptides might not seem like a sustainability story—but for PolyPeptide, it quickly becomes a conversation about chemistry, medicine, and climate action.

As a global Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO), PolyPeptide plays a critical role in pharmaceutical supply chains—producing peptide building blocks that are foundational to life-improving therapies. But behind the scenes, the company is also shaping a broader narrative: one of green chemistry regulatory foresight, and sustainability stewardship.

Sustainability that starts from within

“As Juan-José Gonzalez, our CEO, says, we believe it’s possible to build a successful company and at the same time have a visible, positive sustainable impact,” reflected Andreas. “That’s why we’re embracing innovation, trying to find more efficient and effective ways of doing things.”

PolyPeptide has been actively working on sustainability for years. Their goal is clear: to find smarter, safer ways to manufacture complex peptide ingredients, reduce chemical and water use in production, and invest in greener alternatives. And PolyPeptide’s leadership is fully aligned.

“We didn’t want to mix and match different systems for ESRS and carbon accounting”

Andreas Liese – Global Head of Sustainability and Corporate Compliance

But it’s not just internal commitment driving these efforts. Customers are now approaching PolyPeptide with their own environmental requirements—expecting progress on CO₂ reduction, use of recycled and sustainable compounds, and transparency throughout the supply chain.

“Our customers are increasingly demanding CO₂ footprint data and raw materials sustainably sourced,” explained Julien. “So we’re integrating sustainability through the entire supply chain and pushing our suppliers to do the same.”

An ESG software that pivots for you

To support their ambitions, PolyPeptide selected Position Green as a one-stop platform for ESRS and carbon accounting.

“We didn’t want to mix and match different systems for ESRS and carbon accounting. Position Green gave us an integrated solution that covered both. That simplicity was a huge advantage,” said Andreas. “One key aspect for us was increasing efficiency, ensuring user-friendliness, and having an audit-proof solution—and that’s exactly what we got from Position Green.”

“We were previously managing our CO₂ assessments through Excel, pulling data from multiple systems. It was time-consuming and error-prone.”

Julien adds: “We were previously managing our CO₂ assessments through Excel, pulling data from multiple systems. It was time-consuming and error-prone. Now, with Position Green’s carbon accounting module, the process is not only more efficient— it’s easier and more robust.”As PolyPeptide moves forward, they’ll use the platform not just for reporting, but to track progress on their metrics, support internal scorecards, and better connect data to strategic initiatives like green chemistry and innovation.

“We also report to CDP annually, and having all our carbon accounting data in one place makes that process much more efficient,” said Andreas.

Creating long-term value

For PolyPeptide, sustainability is more than just a compliance exercise. It plays an important role in driving meaningful change—from improving operational efficiency and reducing costs to enhancing corporate reputation, sustainability is embedded in the company’s business logic.

“We already have a strong track record with two non-financial reports with limited assurance, our 2024 climate report, and committed SBTi targets. We’ve completed a group-wide double materiality assessment and have finalized our ESRS gap analysis. With all these investments—in Position Green, ESRS, and carbon accounting—we’re moving forward,” said Julien.

PolyPeptide’s top five key moves to advance sustainability

  1. Focus on materiality: Start with a thorough double materiality assessment—not just for reporting, but to align your sustainability efforts with stakeholder expectations and market benchmarks. This foundation helps shift the focus from risk and compliance to long-term value creation and opportunity.
  2. Stay focused and strategic: Don’t get distracted by regulatory noise or shifting timelines. Even if the rules change, you likely still have reporting requirements to meet. More importantly, your reporting should reflect your broader sustainability strategy—not stand apart from it. Align ESG reporting with your long-term goals to drive real impact.
  3. Build strong data collection processes: Before you can report effectively, you need to ensure there’s a solid process for collecting data across departments and activities. Reporting is just one part—invest time upfront in setting up reliable systems for data access and flow. That foundation is key to quality reporting and long-term ESG success.
  4. Invest in collaboration and communication: Sustainability efforts thrive on cross-functional teamwork and strong partnerships—both internal and external. Identify your allies, align departments, and don’t underestimate the value of education. Training employees and improving communication ensures everyone understands the mission and feels part of the journey.

Find your tribe: Surround yourself with like-minded partners who share your ambition. Whether it’s benchmarking, exchanging ideas, or driving change together—having a trusted network of peers and collaborators can amplify your sustainability impact and keep you moving forward with confidence.
